Every teacher and substitute eventually faces that class—the one that talks over you, ignores instructions, or seems determined to test every ounce of your patience.

Here’s the truth: Middle and high schoolers aren’t trying to be rude. They’re responding to what the environment teaches them to expect.

The good news? There are simple, calm, effective strategies that help you gain control, earn their attention, and keep the class running smoothly—without yelling, lecturing, or begging for quiet.

Let’s break them down.

1. Don’t Start Teaching Until You Have Their Full Attention

This one rule will save you every time: Never compete with noise. If you start talking while a few students are still chatting, the rest of the class learns:

They don’t actually need to listen
The talking kids are setting the tone
Your directions aren’t urgent

Instead, pause completely. Stand still. Look at the area where the talking is happening. Then say, calmly and clearly:

I’ll wait.
Finish your conversations.
I’ll give you a moment to settle.

Stay neutral. Stand comfortably. Don’t lecture. Just wait.

Silence, even 3 seconds of it, sends a powerful message: Your attention matters and is worth pausing for.

2. Lead With Immediate, Clear Direction

Many classroom disruptions start because students don’t know what to do right now. Start class with structure, not chit-chat:

“Phones away, take a seat, and start the warm-up on the board.”

Teens respond best when they know:

What to do
How to do it
When to do it

Clarity eliminates 80% of talking issues.

3. Use Short, Direct Phrases—Not Pleading

Avoid:

“Guys, can we PLEASE get started?”
“Hello? Can you listen for a second?”
“Why is no one paying attention?”

These signal frustration, not leadership. Instead, use calm, short directions:

“Eyes up here.”
“Phones away.”
“Wrap up your conversations.”
“Thank you.”

This shifts the dynamic from asking for permission → setting expectations.

4. Stand in a Power Position

Your physical presence matters. Try this:

Stand in a visible area (front or center)
Plant your feet
Shoulders back
Hold your materials at your side instead of in front of you
Make slow, deliberate movements

Fast, rushed movement communicates stress. Slow, steady movement communicates control. And teens respond to confidence, even the quiet kind.

5. Use Proximity and Movement Wisely

Without saying a word, you can redirect behavior simply by moving closer to the area that’s off task.

Walk the room. Stand near talkers. Pause beside a disruptive table.

You don’t need threats or lectures. Your presence does most of the work.

6. Establish Reset Phrases

When the room gets loud, don’t yell. Use a consistent phrase that signals the class to pause:

“Let’s reset.”
“Hold up.”
“Eyes on me in 3…2…1…”
“Pause right where you are.”

Use the SAME phrase every time. Students respond to consistency much faster than volume.

7. Give Them a Reason to Listen

Teens listen better when they know why. Try adding a purpose statement:

“Give me 15 seconds so you’ll know exactly what you need to finish today.”
“Eyes up here so I can help you get this done faster.”
“If you’re listening now, you’ll have more time at the end.”

Purpose increases cooperation. Cooperation increases attention.

8. Change the Activity Before They Check Out

If students are talking because the activity is dragging, use these quick strategies:

Break long tasks into short chunks
Add a timer
Include opportunities to move
Give them a quick think-pair-share

Attention problems are often engagement problems in disguise.

9. Correct Behavior Without Emotion

The calmer you are, the more control you keep.

Instead of:
“WHY are you still talking?”

Try:
“Talking is paused. Eyes up here.” or “Phones away. Thank you.”

State Expectation → Move on.

No lecture. No tone. No sarcasm.

Teens respect adults who stay steady, not reactive.

10. Reinforce the Students Doing it Right

Instead of fighting for silence, draw attention to the behavior you want:

“Thank you, table 3, ready to go.”
“I appreciate row 2 for getting started immediately.”
“Great, this side of the room is ready.”

Positive momentum is contagious.

When All Else Fails: Reset the Room

Pause
Wait for silence
Give ONE clear direction
Start fresh

Example:

“Let’s reset. Quiet for a moment… thank you. Here’s what we’re doing next: open your Chromebooks to the assignment on Google Classroom.”

A reset is not punishment, it’s clarity.

You Don’t Need to Be Strict. You Need to Be Steady.

Middle and high schoolers don’t respond to power. They respond to presence. When you show up:

clear
calm
consistent
and confident (even if you’re faking it a little)

…students fall in line much faster than you expect.

Your voice doesn’t need to be louder than theirs. It just needs to be more grounded than the noise around you.
