All substitute teacher applicants in Rhode Island must undergo a criminal background check, including national fingerprint-based checks through the BCI and FBI. Candidates apply for substitute teacher certification through the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) online Educator Certification System. RIDE issues a Substitute Teacher Authorization that permits the holder to work as a substitute in Rhode Island public schools. The authorization is typically valid for five years and is renewable. Holders of a valid Rhode Island teaching certificate do not need a separate substitute authorization.
